Assignment of Agency Responsibilities

PPD 21 also contains a few additional responsibilities that were assigned to various Federal departments and agencies.

DHS was assigned responsibility for developing a real-time situational awareness capability for critical infrastructure. To develop this capability, DHS was also made responsible for identifying mechanisms to improve the exchange of relevant information between and among government agencies and private sector operators.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was put in charge of a National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force to coordinate cyber threat information and lead cyber threat investigations.

The Department of Commerce was charged with working with private sector, research, academic, and government organizations to improve technology and tools related to cybersecurity systems.
